Tamagotchi springs back to life as Android app

Tamagotchi alert: time to feed childhood nostalgia.

The egg-shaped digital pet craze that disrupted elementary school classes worldwide in the 1990s re-emerged Thursday as a smartphone app called Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. (Love Is Fun Everywhere).

Sync Beatz teamed up with Bandai, the game's developer, to re-hatch the phenomenon in North America. Only this time the Millennial fan base, now in their 20s and 30s, will not need to hide their pets from teachers under Trapper Keepers and Goosebumps books.

"Two of the Sync Beatz founders have a history of working with Bandai and ? being huge Tamagotchi fans ? saw an opportunity to evolve the brand for the original core audience who were kids back in the late ?90s and are now young adults," Barry Stagg, chief communications officer for Sync Beatz, told the Daily News.

The app re-creates the classic gameplay and introduces a modernized version in color with higher resolution. As a thank you to fans, the app is free to download on Android devices in the U.S. and Canada and, soon, will be available for the iPhone and iPad.

"Tamagotchi was an icon of Generation Y in the 1990s and we couldn't be happier to put it back in the hands of fans through this free app," said Naruo Uchida, CEO of Sync Beatz. "We're confident that this will evoke memories of the original and reinforce its core values of love and nurturing as qualities at the heart of the new Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. brand."
