The Chicago Blackhawks have revamped their coaching staff for their top affiliate in Rockford, hiring former Ohio State University head coach Mark Osiecki to be the next IceHogs assistant coach. The latest move comes on the heels of the organization?s decision not to bring back assistants Steve Poapst and Ben Simon following the 2012-?13 AHL season.
Osiecki was 46-50-10 as the Buckeyes head coach from 2010-?13, but he also has six years of experience as an assistant coach at the University of Wisconsin (2004-'10) and seven as the head coach and general manager of the United States Hockey League?s Green Bay Gamblers (1997-2004).
The Burnsville, Minn., native also coached in the USA Hockey system, spending the 2010, 2011 and 2013 seasons as the leader of the World Junior Championship teams. Osiecki earned two goal medals (2010 and 2013) and one bronze (2011) during his coaching days in the juniors.
?Mark?s extensive experience with player development at the collegiate, junior and international level,? the Blackhawks general manager of minor league affiliations Mark Bernard said in a release, ?will serve as a great asset as we continue to build the future of the Chicago Blackhawks organization.?
I?m now awaiting calls from Bernard, Osiecki and IceHogs head coach Ted Dent. Check back later to see what I think of the new hire.
