This review is from: The Anti 9-to-5 Guide: Practical Career Advice for Women Who Think Outside the Cube (Paperback)

Goodman has created a helpful guide, extremely well-written with frankness and humor. She takes readers through the steps of feeling frustrated with life in a cube to considering alternative escape routes. Of course her own story will inspire readers, as she herself went from cube to freelance status, while managing to live comfortably and even make mortgage payments.

The best part of the book is the section on living the freelance life. She gives down-to-earth advice on organizing the ridiculous amount of paperwork that goes with the freelance life. (I got some good ideas I can use right awway!)

I also liked the section on interviewing for information. She?s listed steps from dazzle (write a nice simple request) to prepare to saying thanks. I couldn?t agree more.

Additionally, Goodman has some excellent resources in the back of the book. Any career-changer would benefit from readings the books she recommends.

This book will be most helpful to thirty-somethings ? those who have worked for five to ten years and are now asking, ?How can I express my creativity in the world?? The Anti Guide makes a great companion to a book that?s similarly targeted, This Time I Dance, by Tama Kieves. Kieves focused more on the emotional and psychological elements,while Goodman deals with practical implementation.

My own career clients tend to be 45-60. While they?d benefit from some elements of this book, I find that senior executives and experiened professionals need to choose different networking approaches.

I have just three quibbles about the book?s content.

First, career consultants often encourage clients to shadow someone who?s in a career they?re considering. I would rather encourage my own clients to talk to half a dozen or more people in a field to get a broader perspective. I wouldn?t give up on a field based on a single shadowing day and I?d investigate further if a day appeared to be a ?wow.?

Second, Goodman recommends creating a website if you?re a writer ? and I agree completely. But you need to create a money-making website, which calls for copy as well as design. It?s not reasonable to expect a whole treatise on the subject but I?d have liked to see some links to sources that can help.

Finally, I agree with Goodman that readers should be cautious before hiring a career coach or consultant. Again, I believe this advice makes moreo sense for the younger reader.

Goodman encourages readers to talk to HR departments and experts in fields of interest. My own experience is that getting through to an information source requires a referral and HR folks are in the business of recruiting and screening.

These days, you should expect to pay for mentors, especially if you?re going off on your own. You might take a continuing ed class at the low end or hire a consultant at the high end, but you pay. I agree with the advice to buy an hour at a time and avoid long, expensive commitmentes. But thes packages work for some clients.

In summary, Goodman?s book makes an excellent contribution to the field. And the writing is so good, it?s a fun read for anyone.

This post is a talk I gave last week to the women?s group at my church.?

?

One day, not too long ago, I was a really good mom. I was up and out the door every day. My family operated on a schedule. I read parenting books and put their advice into practice. I had a discipline philosophy.

I read scripture with my children. We sang worship songs. We memorized verses and psalms. We prayed together every night.?I was organized and my home was in very good order. There was a system for everything.

My older daughter was in school five days a week. My little one took two naps a day, so I had plenty of time on my hands. I exercised, had quiet times, gardened, and went out to lunch.

My life wasn?t perfect, but I loved being a mom, I was happily married, and things were really good.

And as a family, we were on our merry little way and we had lots of plans, dreams, and expectations for the future.

And then about a year ago, I took Bette to an ENT, because we had noticed her not responding to sound. And while we were a little concerned, we mostly just chalked it up to her being a quirky baby.

At the ENT, she took three new patient hearing tests, and she failed all three of them. More tests were scheduled and we learned that she was completely and profoundly deaf. She was a year old and she had spent the entire first year of her life in a world of absolute silence.

When we received her diagnosis, we were devastated.?But we were given the news that Bette would be an excellent candidate for cochlear implants. It was great?news, but it left us with a big decision to make. Do we leave her as she is and learn to sign as a family or do we put her through the surgeries to get implants, which would allow her to hear?

And after a lot or prayer and research, we decided that we wanted Bette to be able to hear. Her first surgery was in July and her implant was turned on three weeks later.?Because Bette had never heard sound before, her first implant was turned on initially at a very soft level. And over time, the sound was slowly turned up, so that it wasn?t until about mid ? October that she was able to fully hear.

And you would think things would become at least somewhat easier and better, with Bette finally able to hear. And I am not kidding, at the same time Bette was finally able to fully hear, she became the neediest, fussiest, most demanding child ever. She was unhappy, she cried all the time and all she wanted was to be held. And it went on for months.

I, of course, had another child that needed love and attention, whom I had also decided to home school this year, which is not easy to do when your other child cries all the time.

It did not help that the noise level in our house was out of control. Because Bette was finally able to hear, everything had to be loud, just to make sure she could hear it. We talked loud, the TV and radio were loud, and Bette was loud. When her ?ears? (cochlear implants) are on, she can hear everything. And she loves being able hear the sound of her own voice. But when her ?ears? are off, she can?t hear anything. She returns to being deaf. But she still wants to hear herself, so she is even louder.

Bette had her second surgery in December and her second implant was activated three days before Christmas ? which on one hand was the best Christmas gift ever ? that my child could now hear out of both of her ears. On the other hand, it just ramped up the noise and the chaos even more.

By New Year?s, things hit a low point. Bette was so unhappy, and no one, least of all me, could figure out why. I spent most of my time managing her and then trying to make sure that Lilla was okay. Home schooling was nonexistent. And most of the things I used to do were impossible. I couldn?t garden, I couldn?t exercise, and I absolutely never went to lunch with friends.

I was not doing one single thing well and I was at the end of my rope. Mostly,?I just hoped that we would survive and in the process, I did not screw up my children.

I think when tragedy strikes ? you get the diagnosis, you suddenly lose someone you love, you get the bad news ? there is an immediate period when work must be done. You create the treatment plan, you start the job hunt, or you plan the funeral. But when that part ends, you are then left on the long hard road of recovery.

Right now, we were on the long hard road of recovering Bette?s hearing, which will take years. And this is by far the hardest thing I have ever done.

Because every single day I wake up, and I have no idea what is going to happen. Every single day is another day on the learning curve of how to parent a deaf child. Very little of what I learned parenting my first child relates to how I need to parent Bette.

So it will probably come as no surprise when I say that we also don?t sing hymns anymore. We don?t learn memory verses or psalms. Our children?s bible has actually been missing for six months and I have no idea where it is.?We don?t wake up and do our school work. I simply cram it in throughout the day whenever I can.

All my systems have fallen apart.? My house is constantly out of order and extremely loud. Most days, I cannot find my shoes.

Every day, I count down the minutes until nap time. And bedtime is my absolute favorite time of day, because it means the day and the chaos is over.

At this point, I don?t have the time or energy to do so many of the things Christian parenting books say you should do to be a good parent. I don?t have it together to do a lot of ?spiritual? things for my family.

But there is one thing I always try to do for my family, and that is to pray for them.

Because the greatest blessing I can give to my children is to pray for them. And not just pray about where they are now, or the issues they are currently dealing with, but who they are growing up to be and who they will be in the future.

And I have gotten into the habit that as I pray for my children, I also pray for my grandchildren and my great grandchildren. Because I can?t think of anything more eternal, more lasting, or more significant that I could give to my family than prayers that last through the generations.

Right now, my best and most effective weapon as a parent is prayer, because I can do it anywhere at anytime. I can do it on my knees, I can do it washing dishes, and I can do it while Bette is crying out a tantrum in her crib. There is no limit to how much I can pray. And it is my best weapon as a parent because I know Jesus is in heaven praying along with me and interceding on my behalf and on behalf of my children.

God is writing a story with each of our lives and wherever you are in your story, I encourage you to pray for your children. Because even if you can?t do anything else, and even if what is happening in your life dismays you, you can still pray for your family and children and that, more than anything else we can do as mothers, makes all the difference in the world.

LONDON (AP) -AC Milan frustrated Barcelona in its attempt to grab a valuable away goal in the Champions League on Wednesday, holding the defending champions to a 0-0 draw while Bayern Munich won 2-0 at Marseille to stay on course for the semifinals.

Barcelona had 62 percent of possession but failed to score in a Champions League match for the first time in 2 1/2 years. When the Spanish side did create chances at San Siro, it was thwarted by Milan's experienced defense, goalkeeper Christian Abbiati and some lenient refereeing from Jonas Eriksson.

The closest Lionel Messi came to scoring was when he had a first-half goal ruled out for a clear offside, leaving the quarterfinal finely balanced ahead of next week's second leg at Camp Nou.

Barcelona will have home advantage as it aims to progress to a meeting with Chelsea or Benfica, but Milan has the defense to protect a lead if it manages to score an away goal.

Such calculations are unlikely to trouble Bayern after Mario Gomez and Arjen Robben scored in the first leg of the German team's quarterfinal in France. Bayern, which will host the final in May, is on course to to face APOEL Nicosia or more likely record nine-time champion Real Madrid.

"We have a return leg yet to play, so I don't want to talk about the semifinal and who we will be playing," Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said. "I don't really have any doubts, but I have respect for Marseille."

Barcelona's form was far below that which brought a 7-1 win and five goals for Messi in the previous round against Bayer Leverkusen. The likes of Abbiati - with a string of saves - Alessandro Nesta and Luca Antonini were able to frustrate Barcelona with some top-class defending.

Milan was lucky not to concede a penalty after Alexis Sanchez broke into the area at the end of a rehearsed move. Sanchez stayed upright despite being barged from behind by a defender but was brought down when Abbiati threw himself across the Chile forward's feet.

Neither challenge was ruled a foul by Eriksson.

Messi drew a diving save on the ground from Abbiati in the 88th and Cristian Tello looked sure to tap in the rebound but Antonini raced back to throw himself in front of the ball, celebrating his block as though he had scored.

Milan rarely threatened after wasting two early chances in quick succession.

Kevin-Prince Boateng took too long to shoot and was blocked after Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets put his teammates under pressure with a misplaced pass. Soon after, the ball broke to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the former Barca striker softly headed it to Robinho, who smacked a wild shot over the bar with only goalkeeper Victor Valdes to beat.

It was the first time Barcelona had failed to score in the Champions League since a 0-0 draw against Rubin Kazan in November 2009.

"We had a lot of chances tonight but unfortunately weren't able to take advantage of them," Valdes said. "We tried to play our short passing game while having possession for long periods. The tie is very much open."

Out of form, hampered by injuries and suspensions, and jeered by its own fans, Marseille barely tested Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer at Stade Velodrome and slipped to its eighth defeat in the past nine games.

Gomez put four-time European champion Bayern ahead with his 11th goal of the competition just before halftime, with Marseille goalkeeper Elinton Andrade to blame for letting the ball slip under his body.

?Pre-schoolers are a different breed, they?re peculiar little folk, very unique and special,? said Hooshidar, describing her playful work of laughing, herding kids that don?t exactly pay attention all the time, playing games and laughing some more. ?This beats working for a living. Classes are held from Carlsbad to Coronado, including at Carmel Grove Park, Carmel Knolls Park, the Ocean Air Recreation Center and Carmel Valley Recreation Center.

Hooshidar, aka ?Coach Bethy,? and her husband Siamak, known to the Rascalz Soccer kids as ?Coach Smacky,? founded Little Rascalz together, trying to make a dream come true. Hooshidar, who was a pre-school teacher in her native England, had come across the pond to the San Francisco area to work as a nanny.

While living in San Francisco, she saw a program attempting to teach soccer to pre-school children and just knew they were taking the wrong approach.

?I thought, this is something we could do in a different style so I Googled the most affable climate in the U.S. and this is where we came up with,? Hooshidar said.

They packed all their belongings in a U-Haul and came down south, ?so broke it was untrue,? begged for permits and fields, and started their first class at Kate Sessions Park with six children.

?We have 4,000 children every year now,? Hooshidar said. ?Talk about the American dream, I mean really, big time?I never in my wildest dreams of thought we?d get to this point.?

Their business has grown every year, even during a recession and Hooshidar believes it?s because their product is unique and has a high quality people can recognize.

?It?s just resonated with people, especially in [this area],? she said. ?Carmel Valley is a quarter of our entire business. We have four locations here in this teeny, tiny area.?

Little Rascalz classes hope to instill a passion for the game in a play-based environment ? balls become dinosaur eggs or sparkly jewels and the children have to get them to their nest or princess castle, respectively. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00363311.
FINDINGS: Between Aug 10, 2006, and March 26, 2007, we randomly allocated 302 participants, of whom 289 (96%) had at least one biopsy procedure after baseline and were included in the primary analysis. By 3 years, 54 (38%) of 144 men in the dutasteride group and 70 (48%) of 145 controls had prostate cancer progression (pathological or therapeutic; hazard ratio 0.62, 95% CI 0.43-0.89; p=0.009). Incidence of adverse events was much the same between treatment groups. 35 (24%) men in the dutasteride group and 23 (15%) controls had sexual adverse events or breast enlargement or tenderness. Eight (5%) men in the dutasteride group and seven (5%) controls had cardiovascular adverse events, but there were no prostate cancer-related deaths or instances of metastatic disease.

That year, Schmeling told his bishop and the St. John's congregation about his relationship with Easler.

"The congregation's response was to schedule a celebration. They didn't know, but I never had any fear of telling them," Schmeling said.

But after a disciplinary hearing, both Schmeling and Easler were removed from the ELCA's clergy roster. St. John's decided to keep Schmeling on anyway.

In 2009 in Minneapolis, delegates to the ELCA's national assembly voted
559-451 to approve a resolution allowing men and women in "publicly accountable, lifelong, monogamous same-gender relationships" to serve as official ministers. Before that, gay men and lesbians had to be celibate to serve as rostered ELCA clergy.

The contentious vote created a schism, with a small fraction of member churches leaving the denomination to create a new one, the North American Lutheran Church.

The Rev. Peter Rogness, bishop of the St. Paul Area Synod, said none of his congregations defected for that group, though four congregations joined another breakaway denomination called the Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ.

Schmeling and Easler were reinstated in 2010. That year, the Rev. Anita Hill, the openly gay and partnered lead pastor at St. Paul-Reformation in St. Paul, and two other lesbian ELCA ministers were added to St. Paul's clergy roster.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A church subjected members of a youth group to a mock kidnapping and interrogations without telling them it was staged, and the outraged mother of one 14-year-old girl has filed a complaint with police.

The pastor of the Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Middletown said the church is "so saddened" that the girl was traumatized at the Wednesday evening youth meeting.

But the pastor, John Lanza, said Friday there have been emails of support from other students at the central Pennsylvania church, 200 miles east of Pittsburgh, because the intent was to prepare them for what they might encounter as missionaries. He didn't disclose the names of those involved but said the mock kidnappers included an off-duty police officer and a retired Army captain.

"It was a youth event, to illustrate what others have encountered on a regular basis," he said, adding that the focus of the lesson was "the persecuted church" in other countries.

Lanza said there were about 17 students at the meeting and the mock kidnappers covered the students' heads, put them in a van and interrogated them. Neither the students nor their parents were told about the raid beforehand, he said, though it was discussed with the parents of one youth who might have health issues.

TV station WHTM interviewed the girl who complained.

"They pulled my chair out from underneath me, and then they told me to get on the ground," she told the station. "I had my hands behind my back. They said, 'Just do as I say, and you won't be hurt.'"

The girl said the teens were taken to the pastor's house, where it appeared he was being assaulted. Eventually, she said, the adults in charge revealed it was a staged event.

"They heard me crying," the girl said. "Why not right then and there tell us it was a joke, when you see me crying?"

Lanza said the church has conducted similar events at least twice before, adding that "there was much thought given to the safety aspect."

"If anyone was ever uncomfortable, they would be removed" from the exercise, Lanza said, though part of the idea was to shock the students with the experience.

Lower Swarta Township police Chief Richard Wiley declined to comment until an investigation into the raid is complete. The names of the mother and daughter who complained haven't been made public.

There could be consequences if the teens didn't know what was going to happen and didn't agree to be a part of the event, Dauphin County First Deputy District Attorney Fran Chardo said.

"It's extremely disturbing," Chardo told WHTM.

Tom Copeland, who studies international affairs and terrorism at Geneva College, a Beaver Falls school that emphasizes a "Christian worldview," questioned the wisdom of submitting a youth group to a mock kidnapping.

"It just seems inappropriate for that age group. You would think there would be permission from the parents," Copeland said, adding that he's never heard of anything like that happening at a church.

He said that while there have been highly publicized episodes of violence directed against Christian missionaries in other countries, it seems those countries' local religious groups are more at risk.

One security expert said role-playing training is sometimes conducted "at the quasi-military level" for groups that are going to work in war zones.

Daniel Karson, chairman of business intelligence and investigations at Kroll, a worldwide risk consulting company with headquarters in New York, said the idea of conflict zone training "is to acclimate someone to a possible situation that might arise." The training might involve everything from what items they should take to the country to a review of who they're meeting and security conditions there, he said.

Lanza said members of the church have made numerous mission trips overseas and have learned to be cautious. He said they were planning a trip to Mexico but reviewed current news and advisories and decided it was unsafe.

Lanza said he "would love to" apologize to the girl and her mother but feels he can't until the police investigation is done. He said the church wants to keep doing the program but would make changes.

"I would find a way that we could continue to keep the shock value," he said, "but I would find a way to inform the parents (beforehand)."

AT&T this afternoon issued a news release for the HTC Vivid's Ice Cream Sandwich update, and mixed in with the mention that the HTC Vivid is the first U.S. smartphone to get the ICS update (and that AT&T is the first U.S. carrier to push out ICS) is a list of phones on AT&T slated to get the update to Android 4.0. Nothing there really surprises us, but it is good to see that the Pantech Element and the Pantech Burst made the cut. Everything else we've already known about from the device manufacturers.
