SYDNEY -- A coroner on Friday opened Australia's fourth inquest into the most notorious and bitterly controversial legal drama in the nation's history: the 1980 death of a 9-week-old baby whose parents say was taken by a dingo from her tent in the Australian Outback.

Azaria Chamberlain's mother, Lindy, was convicted and later cleared of murdering her and has always maintained that a wild dog took the baby. She and her ex-husband, Michael Chamberlain, are hoping fresh evidence they have gathered about dingo attacks on children will convince Northern Territory Coroner Elizabeth Morris and end relentless speculation that has followed them for 32 years.


Anne Lade, a former police officer hired by the court to investigate the case, told a packed courtroom at the Darwin Magistrates Court in the Northern Territory that in the years since Azaria disappeared, there have been numerous dingo attacks on humans, some of them fatal.

Rex Wild, a lawyer assisting the coroner, described several of the attacks and said he believed the evidence showed that a dingo could have been responsible for Azaria's death.

'Balance of probabilities'
The Australian newspaper reported that the court was told there have been 239 recorded attacks by dingoes in Queensland between 1990 and 2011.

"Although it (a dingo killing a child) may have been regarded as unlikely in 1980 ... it shouldn't be by 2011-12," Wild said. "With the additional evidence in my submission, your honor should accept on the balance of probabilities that the dingo theory is the correct one."

Morris adjourned the hearing without issuing a decision, and did not say when she would release her findings.

Azaria's death certificate still lists her cause of death as "unknown." The Chamberlains say they want to set the record straight on behalf of their daughter.

"It gives me hope this time that Australians will finally be warned and realize that dingoes are a dangerous animal," Lindy said outside the courthouse in the Northern Territory capital, Darwin. "I also hope that this will give a final finding which closes the inquest into my daughter's death, which so far has been standing open and unfinished."

According to the Australian Associated Press the Chamberlains? lawyer Stuart Tipple said on ABC Radio before the inquest began Friday that the?couple were not bitter.

"What they really want to do is to get the message out there and to make sure that this sort of tragedy never ever happens again," he said.

Fear and paranoia
Azaria vanished from her tent in the Outback on Aug. 17, 1980, during a family vacation to Ayers Rock, the giant red monolith now known by its Aboriginal name Uluru. Fellow campers told police they heard a low growl followed by a baby's cry shortly before Lindy ? who had been making dinner at a nearby barbecue area ? went to check on her daughter.

Lindy said she saw a dingo run from the tent and disappear into the darkness. There were dingo prints outside the tent, and spots of blood on the bedding inside. Upon seeing Azaria's empty bassinet, Lindy screamed, "The dingo's got my baby!" ? a line made famous by the Meryl Streep movie, "A Cry in the Dark," based on the case.

Azaria's body was never found, though her torn and bloodied jumpsuit turned up in the surrounding desert.

Officials, doubtful that a dingo was strong enough to drag away a baby, charged Lindy with murder. Prosecutors said she slit Azaria's throat in the family car ? which initial forensic tests said was splashed with baby's blood ? and buried her in the desert. Lindy was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

Years later, more sophisticated tests found that the "blood" in the car was a combination of milk and a chemical sprayed during manufacture. Three years into Lindy's prison sentence, a jacket Azaria had been wearing was found by chance near a dingo den. Lindy was released from prison and her conviction was overturned.

Still, three separate coroner's inquests have failed to agree on a cause of death for Azaria. The last inquest, held in 1995, returned an inconclusive finding, with the coroner saying there was not enough evidence to prove a dingo was responsible.

In court, Michael Chamberlain fought back tears as he spoke of the nightmarish aftermath of his daughter's death.

"Since the loss of Azaria I have had an abiding fear and paranoia about safety around dingoes," he said. "They send a shudder up my spine. It is a hell I have to endure."

Australians have followed the case closely since it began, and most have strong opinions. Although public support for Lindy has grown over the years, many still doubt that a dingo could have killed Azaria.

"I think that the people that don't think for themselves aren't ever going to be convinced, and it really doesn't matter what you show them," Tipple told the AP. "I could show them a video of the dingo taking the baby and it wouldn't convince them ? because they've made their mind up."

ZURICH (AP) -A FIFA expert panel wants players to exchange more handshakes on the field to improve the game's image and sportsmanship.

Franz Beckenbauer, chairman of the Task Force Football 2014, said after a meeting Wednesday that it recommended players should meet opponents in the center circle after matches.

"At full time I think it would be a better image ... when leaving the pitch together and not refusing a handshake," Beckenbauer said. "They should be role models and should behave like role models."

The German great later added that the sport must prevent future incidents such as Liverpool striker Luis Suarez's recent refusal to shake the hand of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra before a match.

"This is the first time I ever saw it myself. I think we simply have to stop it," he said in comments translated from German.

Beckenbauer advised against disciplining players for falling short of FIFA's fair play code, saying the governing body should first remind players and coaches of their responsibilities.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter created the task force to suggest ways of improving the quality and image of football at the next World Cup, after suggesting too many matches lacked excitement at the 2010 event in South Africa.

Blatter became embroiled in a separate furor about handshakes last November, following reports that Chelsea and England defender John Terry had aimed racial insults at an opponent. Terry denies the allegations and will stand trial in July.

Blatter later apologized for suggesting that on-field confrontations should be settled by a handshake after the match.

Beckenbauer said he believed a FIFA campaign promoting fair play would be "more intense during the 2014 (World Cup) in Brazil."

The panel, which includes former playing greats Cafu of Brazil and Kalusha Bwalya, now president of Zambia's football body, gave its advice after watching footage of bad-tempered, high-profile matches.

They included the 2010 World Cup final between the Netherlands and Spain; a Champions League semifinal between Real Madrid and Barcelona last April; and last season's Copa Libertadores final between Santos and Penarol.

Bwalya noted that coaches and substitutes also were criticized for their reactions to events on the field.

"Officials on the bench are to first people to get upset," said Bwalya, whose national team won the African Cup of Nations this month to widespread public acclaim.

Beckenbauer said encouraging handshakes and sportsmanship were "small things that could improve the image of football."

He suggested that teams could leave the field together at halftime and emerge for the second period together, as well as gather in the center circle after the final whistle.

"That is what we used to do when I was at school," Beckenbauer said. "I believe one should leave the pitch the same way one has entered the pitch."

In fact, Adobe has a host of plans for its flagship multimedia platform, as outlined in its 2012 roadmap. It all starts with 11.2, which should be landing sooner, rather than later, with support for right and left mouse clicks, multithreaded video decoding and improved GPU acceleration support. That will be followed by Cyril and Dolores, which will also expand the list of hardware-accelerated video cards, as well as improve overall performance and add a few welcome tweaks, like supporting keyboard input in full screen mode. Researchers find new compound to fight strep throat infection

Researchers have discovered a promising alternative to common antibiotics used to fight the bacteria that causes strep throat. In an article published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the scientists discussed how their discovery could fight the infection with a reduced risk of antibiotic resistance.

By screening tens of thousands of small molecules, the team from the University of Missouri and University of Michigan identified a class of chemical compounds that significantly reduced the severity of group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria infection in mice. Their work suggests that the compounds might have therapeutic value in the treatment of strep and similar infections that affect an estimated 700 million people around the world each year. The newly identified compounds could work with conventional antibiotics, such as commonly prescribed penicillin, and result in more effective treatment.

"We know that 70 percent of bacteria causing infections in the hospital are resistant to at least one of the drugs commonly used for treatment," said Hongmin Sun, PhD, the article's first author and an assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Missouri. "Rather than killing off the bacteria, this new compound changes the behavior of the bacteria and makes it less harmful."

Current antibiotics interfere with critical biological processes in the pathogen to kill it or stop its growth. But at the same time, stronger strains of harmful bacteria can sometimes resist the treatment and flourish.

"The widespread occurrence of antibiotic resistance among human pathogens is a major public health problem," said David Ginsburg, MD, a professor of internal medicine, human genetics, and pediatrics at the University of Michigan and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator.

Ginsburg and Sun collaborated on a research team that included Scott Larsen, PhD, research professor of medicinal chemistry and co-director of the Vahlteich Medicinal Chemistry Core at the University of Michigan's College of Pharmacy. Work on this project is continuing in Sun's lab at the University of Missouri and at the University of Michigan, including the preparation of new compounds with improved potency and the filing of patents, Larsen said.

Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world and is most common in developed countries. Colon cancer prognosis is very much dependent on the stage that the cancer is in when detected and treated.

Colon cancer is the third most common form of cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Cancer is often a very sad and painful subject to talk about especially if you or someone you know has been affected by it. Colon cancer is also known as colorectal cancer.

Colorectal cancers often start in the lining of the bowel and if left untreated can grow into the muscle. Most begin as a small growth on the bowel wall which is called a colorectal polyp. These mushroom-shaped growths are usually benign, but some can develop into serious cancer.

Symptoms include changes in bowel habits, lower gastrointestinal bleeding and blood in the stool.

The lifetime risk of developing colon cancer in the United States is about 7%. Factors that increase risk are age, family history of cancer, smoking and poor diet.

Colorectal cancer can take many years to develop and early detection of colorectal cancer greatly improves the chances of survival.

There are several different tests available for this screening which includes a digital rectal exam.

The doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel for abnormal areas. It only detects tumors large enough to be felt in the distal part of the rectum but is useful as an initial screening test.

Tests for blood in the stool are also useful.

A colonoscopy involves placing a lighted probe into the rectum and the entire colon to look for polyps and other abnormalities that may be caused by cancer. A colonoscopy has the advantage that if polyps are found during the procedure they can be removed immediately. Tissue can also be taken for biopsy to screen for cancer.

The best course of action is also prevention and regular screening. Lifestyle is important, eat healthy, get regular exercise and dont smoke. Make regular visits to your doctor and get tested.

Improve Foot Fitness and Reduce Foot Pain for Better Walking Technique and Improved Health

Here are three simple foot fitness tips and foot-care exercises to help reduce foot pain and free up the ankle joint for improved mobility.? Increase calf flexibility for better gait mechanics and discover the benefits of better health with improved foot action when you walk.

Do your feet ever hurt?? According to the APMA most Americans have experienced a foot problem and half say that they have foot pain at least some of the time.? Yet taking care of our feet ranks lowest on the list of body parts that we see as important to maintaining health and wellness.? Not only does foot pain impact and limit activity including walking, exercising, and standing, but people with regular foot pain are more likely to also suffer from additional health issues including:? back pain, knee pain, other joint pain, increased weight, and heart problems.?

If your feet are really hurting, ignoring the issue is not the wisest decision you could be making.? Seeing a podiatrist for an foot-care evaluation would be a great place to start.? Once any serious medical conditions have been addressed, then starting to take better care of your feet on a consistent and regular basis can be an excellent way to improve your overall health and fitness.

Our feet are the basis for good posture.? If our feet hurt, chances are we are shifting the rest of the body out of good alignment when we sit, stand, and walk.? Poor body alignment when you are standing still only gets worse when you start moving, because you?re going to still be holding yourself in bad alignment.? Movement now only reinforces these poor muscle habits, putting more stress on every joint from your toes up!

One of the things I see frequently with my new Pilates clients is stiff ankles and limited calf muscle flexibility.? Stiff ankles usually lead to knee pain or hip problems, and tight calves are an immediate red flag for potential low back pain.?

As a society in general we are sedentary (Sit at work all day, sit in front of the TV in the evening).? Our gait (the mechanics of walking efficiently) has been compromised by the fact that we spend so much time with our hips flexed. ?Because the muscles in the front of our legs are tight, it starts to limit how far the leg swing behind the body for our stride.? Getting the legs to the back when we walk helps to strengthen the hips, and lower back.? The leg to the back also works the foot and ankle through a full range of motion to propel us forward.

Not only does a short stride weaken the hips and lower back, but taking small steps also limits how much the ankle flexes and extends. Our muscles only get stronger in the range of motion they work in.? If the ankle doesn?t work through a full range of motion when we walk, over time, the brain accepts the limited range as the way we are supposed to use the ankle and stops sending a message to your feet to move through a full range of motion.

Here are 3 Simple Steps to Start Improving Your Ankle Mobility & Calf Flexibility:

  1. Ankle Circles ? Sit or lay down on your back.? Hug one knee to your chest and do slow, large range of motion circles of the foot from the ankle.? Be sure that the shin bone stays still while moving the foot.? Make the circles go evenly to the inside and outside, with a nice point through the bottom, and a strong reach through the heel to flex the ankle.? Ankle circles can help work and release the muscles of the lower leg to improve ankle mobility so that flexing the foot is easier for a more effective calf stretch.? Do 5-10 Circles each direction.
  2. Point & Flex ? Sit with both legs extended forward, or lay down on your back with both legs straight up to the ceiling.? With both legs ?straight, point your ankles, then toes like a ballerina to stretch the top of the foot and strengthen the arch.? Then, relax the toes and start reaching the heel to the ceiling to flex the foot. (like you are standing on the ceiling)? Note:? if you flex the toes back instead of reaching the heel up, you will be jamming the toes into the foot, and jamming the foot into the ankle ? which will restrict ankle mobility.? Keeping the toes relaxed and initiating the flex from the heel will help to open the ankle joint for freer movement and a better calf stretch.
  3. Increase your Stride Length when You Walk ? Learning to walk with a longer stride will have you working through the foot in a full range of motion.? From a flexed foot reaching through the heel to heel strike the ground in the front, to rolling through the foot from the heel to the ball of the foot mid-stride, to pointing the arch standing on the ball of the foot with the leg in back, to finally pushing the toes to a point to propel you forward.? Then the leg swings through, the heel reaches away, and it all starts over again!

Remember, if your feet are really hurting, it?s important to have them checked out by a qualified health professional (doctor or podiatrist) before you start increasing your activity or adding new foot care exercises to your daily routine.

When looking through magazines and watching shows on TV, we always see these models, or actors and actresses that have beautiful bodies, you know, the tight stomach, chiselled abs, toned muscles, and all that. And we often find ourselves hoping that we had bodies like theirs too.

But for a woman having to juggle a busy work schedule, school, or the responsibility of taking care of her family, keeping a healthy and fit body sometimes takes the backseat in her order of priorities. Especially since unlike those actors and actresses on TV, most women don?t have an army of dieticians and personal trainers to tend to their every whim.

And although this really is the case for a good amount of women out in the world today, one must not disregard the importance of having a strong body, because not only does it keep us from illness, it also increases the total quality of life.

So regardless of how hectic your schedule might get, you owe it to yourself to set aside a few hours a week to attend to your body. Fitness for women does not have to be a complicated and time consuming activity, a simple round of simple stretching exercises and a light cardio program will not take more than a few minutes off your daily schedule.

And if it is possible to spare an hour or so on weekends and on your day off from work, you could also visit a fitness gym for a more rigorous exercise, and to obtain additional tips on exercise and proper diet from your gym instructors and buddies.

Now that you have a plan worked out, take into account that consistency is a crucial factor in working with fitness for women. Simply put, if you would like good results, you have to be consistent.

Don?t let your determination for fitness fizzle out after a couple of days or weeks, or when your hectic schedule takes a turn for the worse. Take conscious steps to make your work out and proper diet regimen a central part of your every day routine.

The key is creating an easy schedule or system for your fitness activities, and adhering to it no matter what.

Conservation town hall

The Financial Readiness Program invites you to participate in the 2012 Financial Makeover Challenge. The challenge is a six-month program that teaches Soldiers and families to budget and manage their money in a way that sheds bad financial habits and develops habits that take control of their finances. FRP?s coaches will help the participants overhaul how they manage their finances with regular coaching sessions and classes through the six-month period. Participants will learn how to reduce debt, prepare a budget, and start a savings plan that will empower them to make decisions about their lifestyle in order to attain a successful financial makeover. Learn to bounce back from whatever life throws your way with the Active Military Families Resilience Training offered by Army Community Service. C.A.F.E. (Cultural Awareness for Everyone) is a program designed to encourage community awareness for all Fort Bliss teens. Youth Sports tennis
Registration for Team Bliss Youth Sports spring tennis is under way and open through Feb. 29. Youth Sports tennis is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 18. Registration costs $50 for the first child and $42 for each additional child. The season is anticipated to run from March through April. This is a non-competitive league and the 50 percent participation rule is in effect. Parents must attend a sportsmanship class before a child is eligible to participate in the Youth Services league. Home-school PE group
Beginning Tuesday, Youth Sports will host a home-school physical education group at the YouthPlex, Bldg. 195 on Chaffee Road. The group will meet from 9 to 9:50 a.m. each Tuesday and Thursday for elementary-aged children or from 10:20 to 11:10 a.m. for middle- and high-school-aged children. The group?s mission is to provide a quality physical education opportunity for home-schooled students that offers a unique variety of physical experiences. Saturday child care
Saturday care for CYSS-registered children is shared between Logan and Milam facilities. Logan Child Development Center and Milam Child Development Center share care for CDC-age children, while the Logan School-Age Center and Milam School-Age Center alternate weekends for school-age children. The Milam centers are open even-dated Saturdays and the Logan facilities are open odd-dated Saturdays. No programs are open on training holiday weekends. Range safety
The Fort Bliss Rod and Gun Club offers a range safety course for children ages 6 to 17. The class is held at 1 p.m. every second and fourth Saturday on a monthly basis. SKIES judo classes
Your children can learn elf-confidence, concentration and leadership skills, as well as physical coordination, power and flexibility ? all while having fun ? when they take judo classes with SKIES Unlimited. Judo is a Japanese martial art in which opponents use balance and body weight, with minimal physical effort, to throw each other or hold each other in a lock. Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing techniques but also involves considerable grappling on the ground utilizing specialized pins, control holds and arm locks. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that emphasizes kicks thrown from a mobile stance, employing the leg?s greater reach and power. It combines combat techniques, self-defense, sport and exercise. Taekwondo training generally includes a system of blocks, kicks, punches and open-handed strikes and may also include various take-downs or sweeps, throws and joint locks. Extended care available
Extended child care is available to single Soldiers and dual military families who have a mission-related task through the Child, Youth and School Services Family Child Care program. FCC will verify the duty requirement. Examples of extended care events include but are not limited to CQ, staff duty, field problems, a special event on a weekend (i.e. Veteran?s Day Parade) or care on a federal holiday. No payment is rendered by the Soldier. An Army subsidy pays the provider directly for the extended care hours. Note: This program is not for families who have a non-military spouse. The CYSS Middle School and Teen Program now offers after-school pickup service at even more middle and high schools in the El Paso area. AER kick-off
The annual Army Emergency Relief campaign is scheduled to kick off at 9 a.m. Feb. 29 at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center at East Fort Bliss. AER is a private nonprofit organization incorporated in 1942 by the Army. AER?s sole mission is to help Soldiers and their family members. AER Fort Bliss provides financial assistance to active-duty Soldiers, retirees and their family members during times of valid emergency needs. It provides interest-free loans or grants to those who qualify for financial assistance.? AER is funded solely through voluntary contributions from Soldiers, retirees, unsolicited corporate contributions, repayments of loans made through the program and income from investments.

Recycling Center Bldg. closure
The Fort Bliss Recycling Center building only is closed temporarily due to recent water damage.? The Recycling Program is still on-going and staff has been temporarily moved to Bldg. 622 S. Taylor Road. Lilia Lenhart, DPW-ED program manager said recycling will continue on a regular basis. ?Nothing has changed ? training will still be conducted and audits of the recycling containers will be performed as scheduled,? said Lenhart.
