Terror threat: Senator cites increased 'chatter'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The weekend closure of nearly two dozen U.S. diplomatic posts in the Muslim world resulted from the gravest terrorist threat seen in years, the top Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee said Sunday.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss said "the chatter" intercepted by U.S. intelligence agencies led the Obama administration to shutter 22 embassies and consulates and issue a global travel warning to Americans.

"Chatter means conversation among terrorists about the planning that's going on ? very reminiscent of what we saw pre-9/11," Chambliss, R-Ga., told NBC's "Meet the Press."

"This is the most serious threat that I've seen in the last several years," he said.

Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, told ABC's "This Week" that the threat intercepted from "high-level people in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula" was about a "major attack."

Yemen is home to al-Qaida's most dangerous affiliate, blamed for several notable terrorist plots on the United States. They include the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit and the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

Rep. Pete King, who leads the House Homeland Security subcommittee on counterterrorism and intelligence, said the threat included dates but not locations of possible attacks.

"The threat was specific as to how enormous it was going to be and also that certain dates were given," King, R-N.Y., said on ABC.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a House Intelligence Committee member, said the "breadth" of the closures suggests U.S. authorities are concerned about a potential repeat of last year's riots and attacks at multiple embassies, including the deadly assault in Benghazi, Libya, where the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed.

In addition, Interpol, the French-based international policy agency, has issued a global security alert in connection with suspected al-Qaida involvement in several recent prison escapes including those in Iraq, Libya and Pakistan.

Those prison breaks add to the concerns about an attack, said Schiff, D-Calif., also noting the approaching end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.

"So you have a lot things coming together. ... But all of that would not be enough without having some particularly specific information," he said.

The Obama administration's decision to close the embassies and the lawmakers' general discussion about the threats come at a sensitive time as the government tries to defend recently disclosed surveillance programs that have stirred deep privacy concerns and raised the potential of the first serious retrenchment in terrorism-fighting efforts since Sept. 11.

The Senate Judiciary Committee chairman has scoffed at the assertion by the head of the National Security Agency that government methods used to collect telephone and email data have helped foil 54 terror plots.

Schiff said he has seen no evidence linking the latest warnings to that agency's collection of "vast amounts of domestic data."

Other lawmakers defended the administration's response and promoted the work of the NSA in unearthing the intelligence that lead to the security warnings.

"The bottom line is ... that the NSA's job is to do foreign intelligence," Ruppersburger said. "The whole purpose is to collect information to protect us."

Added King, a frequent critic of President Barack Obama: "Whether or not there was any controversy over the NSA at all, all these actions would have been taken."

On Friday the Obama administration announced the weekend closures and the State Department announced a global travel alert.

The warning urged American travelers to take extra precautions overseas, citing potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists. It noted that previous terrorist attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats. It suggested travelers sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit. The alert expires on Aug. 31.

The statement said that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests.

The intelligence intercepts also prompted Britain, Germany and France to close their embassies in Yemen on Sunday and Monday. British authorities said some embassy staff in Yemen had been withdrawn "due to security concerns."

Canada also announced it was closing its embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Bomb, mortar attacks kill 8 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi authorities say bomb and mortar attacks across the country have killed eight people, including a judge.

Police officials say a roadside bomb struck an army patrol near the northern city of Mosul early Sunday, killing three soldiers.

In Tikrit, in central Iraq, a car bomb killed judge Sajid Abdul-Amir as he was driving to his work, police said.

In eastern Baghdad, two people were killed in a blast in a commercial street, police said. Meanwhile, mortar rounds landed on houses in the capital's western suburbs, killing two people.

Medical officials confirmed the death toll for all attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Violence has increased recently in Iraq alongside escalating political and sectarian tensions.

How Much Is a Sports Rivalry Worth?

New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez (L) takes a punch from Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek in the third inning at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts July 24, 2004.

New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez takes one from Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek at Fenway Park July 24, 2004.

This is part of?a special series about great rivalries: between tech titans, sports franchises, and even dinosaur hunters. Read about the series?here.

When I went to my first game at Fenway Park in 2002, I was excited to hear Red Sox fans outside the stadium chanting ?Yankees suck! Yankees suck!?

I turned to the guy who invited me and said, ?Hey, you got me tickets to a Yankees game? Awesome.?

?Nope,? he answered. ?They?re playing the Cleveland Indians.?

By some subjective and completely unscientific measures, the Yankees?Red Sox rivalry is the most storied in American sports. In fact, it has been a rather lopsided affair, even accounting for the Theo Epstein?led resurgence of the Red Sox that began about a decade ago. The Yankees have won 27 world championships. Boston has won seven, with just two of those since 1918. The Red Sox have a .457 winning percentage against the Yankees since 1900, their worst record against any team in the American League. Still, the Sox obsession with the Bronx Bombers has a tangible benefit.

?Boston is a relatively large-market team, but the Red Sox enhance their value by playing up the rivalry with the Yankees,? says Evan Osborne, an economist at Wright State University who has done economic modeling on sports rivalries. ?For the Yankees, it?s much less important. Everyone hates them, so, in a sense, every team is their rival.?

If a sports team needs one thing?well, it?s probably a large market. But if a franchise needs a second thing to ensure its economic health, it?s a good rivalry. How much hay has Boston made by playing David to the Yanks? Goliath? According to the 2013 Forbes rankings, the Red Sox are the third most valuable team in baseball, behind the larger-market Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox are worth 47 percent more than the Philadelphia Phillies, who occupy a much bigger city. Though there are obviously many factors that come into play here?the added value of a treasured landmark like Fenway Park, Boston?s historic affection for baseball?the Phillies? lack of a historic rival like the Yankees surely factors into the club?s lower standing in the financial standings.

The Forbes baseball rankings, from top to bottom, demonstrate the value of a rivalry. The top few teams are all involved in intense rivalries: The Yankees have the Red Sox, the Dodgers have the Giants, and the Cubs have the Cardinals. Most baseball fans would struggle to identify true rivals for the least valuable teams. (Sorry, Royals fans. The Cardinals don?t really think of you as their main rivals.) It?s hard to separate correlation from causation here, but the correlation is striking.

College football, with only a dozen games a year and enormous stadiums to fill, may be the most extreme example of the economic value of sports rivalries to a community. The game between the University of Idaho and Boise State reportedly brings $1 million to the Moscow, Idaho economy in one weekend. And a local restaurateur reports a 65 to 75 percent increase in sales on the day of the Utah?BYU game. And, where there?s money, politicians are sure to meddle. The South Carolina House of Representatives last year considered, but ultimately rejected, a law mandating an annual football game between Clemson and the University of South Carolina. And a former Texas governor publicly pleaded in vain to keep Texas A&M in the Big 12 to maintain their rivalry with the University of Texas.

Recognizing the value of a good rivalry, American sports leagues go to great lengths to create and promote them. When the NFL realigned its divisions in 2002, the league minimized the combined geographic distances between the teams in each conference, likely as a means to maximize the possibility that nearby fans would develop intense antipathy for each other. The divisions with the least combined distance between the teams, the NFC North and the AFC Central, feature some of the strongest rivalries, according to Osborne?s research. Interleague games in Major League Baseball and interdivision matchups in college football conferences introduce an obvious unfairness into the sport?teams whose traditional rivals are strong are dealt a handicap?but we tolerate it for the sake of entertainment.

Rivalries have an economic value because they seem to tap into the same subconscious processes as other forms of marketing. As Charles Duhigg described in The Power of Habit, marketers use a habit loop consisting of a cue, a routine, and a reward to hook consumers on a product. (Marketing legend Claude Hopkins hooked Americans on toothpaste, for example, by using the film that naturally develops on teeth as a cue and a beautiful smile as a reward.) Rivalries work on the same primitive neurological process. ESPN plays up traditional rivalries on SportsCenter (the cue) in the week leading up to the game (the routine), while the winners take some sort of tangible prize (the reward), like Paul Bunyan?s Axe or the Fremont Cannon. Major League Soccer, unwilling to wait for rivalries to develop organically, has rather unsubtly attempted to push the same buttons in our basal ganglia, with the Rocky Mountain Cup and the Cascadia Cup.

Stoking our primordial passions is a risky economic gambit, though. It may inspire us to care deeply and spend without inhibition, but it also brings out the worst in fans, owners, and athletic directors. Racist chanting and inflatable bananas, directed at superstar Mario Balotelli, interrupted the Milan derby earlier this year. Otherwise good coaches, like Ohio State?s John Cooper, have lost their jobs largely because of poor records against a single team. And rivalry destroyed the Scottish soccer league. As Celtic and Rangers improved, the rest of the league atrophied or regressed, essentially reducing the entire season to the home and away series between the top two teams. In an attempt to finally vanquish their rivals, Rangers owner Sir David Murray boldly declared in 2000, ?For every five pounds Celtic spend, we will spend ten.? The strategy eventually led to the liquidation of his team, with the remnants sent down to a lower division last year.

Like so many other economic tricks, rivalries can do more damage than good when left unregulated. And it?s risky to rely on rivalry as a primary economic strategy. The Yankees, the team that everyone hates, has long been the richest team in the sport. Boston, which is substantially less reviled, is no closer to surpassing the Bronx Bombers? wealth than they are to exceeding their trophy haul.

Dragon's Crown ships 300K across first week in Japan

Dragon's Crown scaled to heights of 300,000 shipments in its first week at retail, a welcome boost for publisher Atlus amid the financial struggles of its parent company.

Those figures are restricted to Japanese shipments (including download purchases), and could rise dramatically after Tuesday, August 6, when the PS3 and Vita brawler will be available in North America. At the very least the game proved more than popular with our Danny, who deemed Dragon's Crown to be developer Vanillaware's best effort yet.

"While it scales back the complexity that defined Princess Crown and Odin Sphere," said Danny in his four-and-half-stars review, "its focus on deep, varied fighting mechanics make it one of the best beat-em-ups released for any platform in recent years."

As for Atlus, it'll wait to see how the situation with parent company Index shakes out. Index is expected to sell its subsidiary options after effectively filing for bankruptcy protection. Atlus has reassured fans that its games, including Dragon's Crown, are "shipping on time."

Nigeria: Islamic extremists kill 8 in northeast

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) ? Islamic extremists killed eight people in an attack targeting teachers and Muslim clerics in northeast Nigeria, witnesses and the military said Thursday.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Sagir Musa also warned that the Boko Haram terrorist network plans more such killings and "massive attacks" aimed at the northeastern city where their extremist movement was born ? Maiduguri, capital of Borno state.

"The Joint Task Force wishes to alert citizens ... of the impending plans by Boko Haram terrorists to carry out massive attacks and bombings in Maiduguri metropolis and other parts of Borno State any moment from now and during the Eid al-Fitr." That celebration on Aug. 8 marks the end of the Ramadan fasting period.

Musa said Tuesday's attack in Bui town, 185 kilometers (115 miles) south of Maiduguri, killed eight civilians and appeared to be the beginning of the planned campaign.

Witness Bala Anjikui said the militants struck at night and targeted teachers, like him, and Islamic clerics.

Indicating a change of tactics, he said the militants used only knives to kill their victims ? apparently to keep the noise of gunshots from attracting soldiers.

Nigeria declared a state of emergency on May 14 to fight an Islamic uprising by militants in the northeast who want to impose Islamic law across a country divided almost equally between the predominantly Muslim north and mainly Christian south.

The insurgency poses the greatest threat in years to security in Africa's biggest oil producer and most populous nation of more than 160 million.

Earlier Thursday, the military congratulated themselves on the arrest of a Nigerian terrorist leader in neighboring Niger, saying it had foiled a plot to regroup and launch more attacks.

A statement Thursday said intelligence agents from both countries had been on the trail of the leader who was arrested Saturday in a border area. It did not identify the leader or his group.

Northeast Nigeria borders Niger and Chad and troops from all three countries have formed a joint force to try to secure hundreds of kilometers of porous borders.

The statement said the arrested leader had fled the military clampdown since the state of emergency was introduced and was recruiting and training militants in Niger to launch terrorist attacks in Nigeria.

Syria's Assad lauds his army, says he will win war

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? The Syrian president has lauded his military troops, saying they are fighting the "fiercest" war but that he is confident they will win in the country's conflict.

Bashar Assad's comments came in a statement marking Syria's Army Day on Thursday.

Assad says: "Had we in Syria not been confident of victory, we wouldn't" have been able to resist" for over two years.

More than 100,000 people have been killed since the uprising against the Assad family's four-decade rule began in March 2011. The revolt later escalated into a civil war, which has uprooted millions of people from their homes.

Assad's forces have been making significant gains against the rebels on several key fronts recently, mostly in the central province of Homs and near the capital Damascus.

The Friends We've Made

Hi everyone! As you've probably heard (So Near, and Yet So Far), we need another $4000 to cover the costs of cleaning, upgrading, replacing, etc all of our cams for the next nesting season. We'd like to add a second cam with night vision at Delta, sound at Harrison Mills, more bandwidth at Lafarge - and it would be nice if eagles nested successfully at White Rock, though that is a bit beyond our ability to organize. But the rest is possible, if we have the funds.

However, that's not the only reason we need money. It costs in the neighborhood of $30,000/year to keep our website, forum, and cams physically streaming to the internet. Part of that is included in the cost for each cam - but that $30,000 per year also covers the expenses of our forum and website, and the media gallery - and a whole lot of photos that have been uploaded over the last few years for everyone to enjoy.

? ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ please ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ?

I used this image below (which clicks bigger) last year (with a few changes - my avatar in the lower right corner is now Birdie from Harrison Mills - almost ready to fledge!) - but the message is still the same. There are now lots of cams on lots of nests all around the world - and lots of places and ways to gather to discuss what's happening at your favorite cams - and to paraphrase what forum member terrytvgal says so eloquently in her signature line - I'm here because of the friends I've made. love

I think perhaps I'm not alone in finding the forum and website a great source of information about eagles and other wildlife - and a great place to chat with like-minded individuals who also are amazed at what we can see on the cams. We moved to this new forum at the beginning of 2010 - a bit over 3-1/2 years ago - and there are already over half a million posts here! 1383 people have posted at least once, 750 have posted 5 or more times, 234 have posted more than a hundred times - and 87 of us have posted more than a thousand times!

I know that many of you have already donated - and I would like to thank you again for your support! You're the greatest! Left thumb up

And if you are one of the other 700+ people who have posted several times - please consider making a donation in support of the costs of maintaining the forum, website and other infrastructure. We're encouraging people to use CanadaHelps to make their donations - you'll get a receipt almost instantly, and it saves HWF valuable time and resources. And you don't need to be in Canada to use CanadaHelps - just click the blue button! Or you can choose one of our other Five Easy Ways to Donate.

~

And we do know that financial donations aren't the best way for everyone to contribute - so I'd like to take a moment here to also thank those who help out on the forum and website, and those who watch and control the cams and report and take s'caps and make videos - and make this the educational resource it was meant to be, and those who keep things running smoothly on Facebook and the various chat threads and all sorts of places that I'm only now learning about, and our content providers who add a whole 'nother level to the data on our forum by reporting on an amazing variety of wildlife. Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart. love And thank you all on behalf of Hancock Wildlife Foundation - it's you who make this such a marvelous resource.

And I'd like to close with the other reason I'm here, besides all the friends I've made - which is that I truly believe this is the best site to watch eaglets like Tux from Delta 2, Feathers from Lafarge and Birdie from Harrison Mills grow from little balls of fluff to fully-flighted young eagles in about 12 weeks. There are other forums that watch individual cams - but we have the option of discussing and comparing dozens of cams. And thanks to your support - all of our nests have at least one pan-tilt-zoom cam - which provides pictures like these (click bigger):

Please donate now so we can see what the next year will bring.

Thank you!

Credits: Thanks to cococat9 for the s'cap of Feathers ready to fly; to IrishEyes for the s'cap of tiny Birdie being fed; to mjb for the s'cap of almost-ready-to-fly Birdie looking thoughtful; and to all the zoomers who make s'caps like this possible (the other s'caps are mine); thanks to terrytvgal for her signature quote "I came for the eagles, and stayed for the friends I made"; and thanks to the 69 members whose avatars I used for the collage - and I wish I could have found a way to use them all.

Microsoft delivers Office Mobile for Android phones

Just over a month after making available a mobile version of its Office suite for iPhone users, Microsoft is doing the same with an Android version of Office Mobile.

officemobileandroid

And just like it did with the iPhone version, Microsoft is tying the Android version of Office Mobile to Office 365. Users who want to use the mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint on their Android phones will need to have an Office 365 subscription, such as Office 365 Home Premium, Office 365 ProPlus or these other SKUs to get them.

Office Mobile for Android phones (known officially as "Office Mobile for Office 365 Subscribers") is launching initially in the U.S. on July 31 and can be downloaded from the Google Play Store for free. The plan is to make it available in 33 languages and 117 markets "over the next several weeks."

The Office Mobile for iPhone and Android suites are both like the Office Mobile suite that Microsoft preloads on Windows Phone, meaning they are optimized for the editing, viewing and creation of Word and Excel documents. (Microsoft already has offered OneNote for Android phones since February 2012.) Unlike Office Mobile for iPhone,?Office Mobile for Android phones does not include an option to purchase an Office 365 subscription from within the app, however. Office Mobile for Android phones only has a ?sign in? option.

Office 365 subscribers are authorized install Office Mobile on up to five iPhones and/or Android phones. (Office Mobile on Windows Phones don't count against that total.) Office 365 University subscribers can install Office Mobile on up to two non-Windows Phones.

Microsoft is still widely believed to be developing versions of its core Office apps that would be customized to work on iPads and Android tablets. As with the iPhone and Android phone versions, these Office tablet apps would likely be tethered to an Office 365 subscription, tipsters have hinted.

One internal Microsoft roadmap I saw indicated that Office for iOS and Android might not arrive until the fall of 2014. But it was unclear from that roadmap if this was a reference to Office for iPhones and Android phones or Office for iPad and Android tablets. If the fall 2014 date was simply a reference to the new Office Mobile suites, Microsoft may have decided to push these cross-platform versions of Office for mobile devices out more quickly than planned not so long ago.

Moto X coming to Canada as a Rogers exclusive priced at $190 on a two-year contract

Motorola just made headlines here in the US with the official unveiling of the Moto X, and now it's making waves with similar news in the Great White North. That's right folks, the Moto X is coming to Canada, but will be exclusively available to customers of Rogers. The handset arrives in August for as low as $189.99 when attached to a two-year contract, and existing Rogers customers can reserve one for their very own right now. Unfortunately, the X will only be available in black or white (initially, at least), but hopefully additional colors and perhaps even the wood veneer versions will come later -- we're thinking maple's a good way to go.

Centrica H1 earnings rise two percent on North Sea output

LONDON (Reuters) - British utility Centrica posted a 2 percent rise in adjusted earnings over the first half of the year, spurred by higher output from North Sea gas fields.

The company made 767 million pounds in adjusted earnings and overall revenue rose 14 percent to 13.7 billion, Centrica said on Wednesday.

Its upstream business posted a 16 percent rise in operating profit to 802 million pounds as production from its Norwegian fields more than doubled year on year.

Operating profit at the company's U.S. retail arm increased by 6 percent and Centrica emphasised North America was more attractive than the UK for acquisitions.

"The low gas price makes acquisitions in North America relatively attractive compared to the UK, where costs are increasing," Centrica said in its half-year statement.

The utility on Tuesday announced the acquisition of Hess Corp's energy retail business for about $1 billion.
